Rift plays much like your typical MMORPG except for two things: Souls and Rift.

The soul class system in Rift is overly abundant and each combination can give rise to a totally different character with different abilities. The soul class system is divided into four primary classes: Warrior, Cleric, Mage, and Rogue. Each of these class systems excel in specific areas but the intricacy extends far deeper than general traits. Warriors are known to be very well balanced characters with a good attack-defense combination; Clerics and Rogues are more middle-type characters that have close combat and melee traits depending on the specific soul combination selected. Lastly, Mages utilize magic to do their stuff but there are also soul combinations from other classes that can give mages a tutorial on wielding magical powers.

Within each of the primary class are eight souls that determine the final state of a character. A player can equip up to 3 souls for a character and the ability tree is specific to each combination. The main soul is determined by the highest number of points allocated to that soul with the remaining 1 or 2 as off souls or secondary souls. Each soul type is unlocked as a reward for completing quests and players can change their soul combinations accordingly but this is for a fee. The points allocated to each soul are gained from leveling up and there are no restrictions for allocation within a defined ability tree.

A classic example of the versatility of this system is given by the Cleric class. Cleric soul types are primarily designed for healing but the Shaman soul, a Cleric subset, has a special affinity for melee damage. When questing or leveling up, Clerics can switch the point allocation to max the Shaman. Once it is time to do dungeon raids or rift events within a group, the Cleric can simply revert to a support role and re-arrange the points for healing.

A second unique feature of the game is the rift itself. Rifts are portals that randomly appear carrying monsters, aliens, invaders, and other enemies. These can be very fun but also very frustrating if the group is not tailor made to take care of the challenges. For starters, you will need a tank, a healer, an off-tank, a secondary healer, and at least 4 DPS damage dealers, three of which should do close combat and one melee character.
